Audits every route the March-2023 client can call against what this server
actually serves, and fixes the defects that were breaking gameplay. Adds
docs/recroom-2023-client-api-complete.md as the reference: ~500 route
literals across 13 subsystems, with verb, request/response shape, and a
per-subsystem diff. 315 defects catalogued; the ones fixed here are listed
in its "Already fixed" table.
Path coverage was never the problem — 465 of 506 routes already had
handlers. The failures were in shape, and they cluster into four causes:
- Wrong verb. The verb is a BestHTTP.HTTPMethods ordinal (GET=0 .. PATCH=5),
confirmed from that enum's static constructor. Routes registered POST-only
while the client PUTs returned 405, which made room consumables neither
buyable nor consumable and blocked every room-key edit.
- Bare scalar wrapped in an object. The client reads `1000`, not
`{"Limit":1000}`; the issuing method signature says which. Wrapping makes
the deserializer throw and the feature dies silently.
- [FromBody] vs form-urlencoded. The client sends nearly every write as form
data, which an [ApiController] action bound [FromBody] rejects with 415
before the handler runs. This alone broke all 13 club member-management
endpoints. Adds Binding/FormOrJsonModelBinder so this is fixed once.
- Notify dispatch keys. Both enum overloads of the client's RegisterHandler
lower the id via Int32.ToString() and register only that numeric key, and
lookup is a case-sensitive TryGetValue that returns silently on a miss. We
were sending the enum NAME for most ids, so friend-request updates, forced
logout, maintenance broadcasts, live balance and consumable updates, and
invention moderation pushes all evaporated with no error anywhere.
Notable behavioural bugs fixed:
- Editing a club announcement deleted it: PUT was a third binding on the
delete handler. Split apart, and the missing create route added.
- leaderboard/CheckAndSetStat did not exist. The 2023 client has no SetStat
literal at all, so every leaderboard score it wrote was discarded.
- Setting a club clubhouse cleared it: the handler read roomId from the query
while the client sends it in the body, then wrote the resulting null.
- Club join requests were inverted (the enum is Open=0, InviteOnly=1,
AskToJoin=2), so ask-to-join clubs rejected everyone and invite-only clubs
quietly admitted them.
- Room bans were pushed as id 24, for which the client registers no handler;
they now go out as ModerationKick with IsBan, so the ban takes effect
immediately instead of at next login.
- Room-key ownership queries answered for the wrong player, and "has anyone
bought this key" asked "did I buy it" — always false for the creator.
Also persists settings that were previously acknowledged and dropped
(playlist accessibility/restrictions/level-voting/warning, per-player status
visibility, VR movement mode and avoid-juniors, custom room codes), which is
what the new columns in the migration are for.
One test asserted the old nested PriceAndCurrency response shape; the
client's consumable formatter has no such key and reads Price and
PurchaseCurrencyId flat, so the test was corrected alongside the handler.

Runtime topology
The production runtime is the gateway-fronted service split.
DorkNet.Server remains available as the shared compatibility runtime
and as a standalone debug/fallback image. In the compose stack it runs as
monolith behind the gateway for route families that have not been
assigned to a dedicated service yet.
The service split works like this:
DorkNet.Gatewayreverse-proxies public requests by host/path.DorkNet.Services.Identity,DorkNet.Services.Rooms,DorkNet.Services.Notify,DorkNet.Services.Content,DorkNet.Services.Social,DorkNet.Services.Commerce,DorkNet.Services.Platform,DorkNet.Services.Moderation, andDorkNet.Services.Webrun the shared server stack behind a route ownership guard. That keeps response shapes identical while moving traffic by domain/path slice.DorkNet.Gatewayexposes/internal/servicesand/internal/services/health, plus/internal/routesfor the active proxy table.DorkNet.Services.Identityexposes/internal/identity/capabilities.DorkNet.Services.Roomsexposes/internal/rooms/capabilities.DorkNet.Services.Notifyexposes/internal/notify/capabilities.- The other slices expose matching
/internal/{service}/capabilitiesendpoints.
docker-compose.microservices.yml starts gateway, all dedicated service
slices, the monolith fallback, and Compose-managed Postgres and Redis for
local testing. docker-compose.microservices.dokploy.yml is the Dokploy
production shape: it adds a cloudflared sidecar that joins the same
Compose network and forwards Cloudflare Tunnel traffic to
http://gateway:8080. Object storage is external S3-compatible storage
configured with DORKNET_S3_* environment variables; the compose files
do not run MinIO or Garage.
Dockerfile.service is the reusable service image. It accepts
PROJECT_PATH and APP_DLL build args, rebuilds the admin/site Vite
SPAs for service images that need static assets, publishes the selected
.NET project, and runs that DLL in the runtime image. The root
Dockerfile builds only the standalone/fallback DorkNet.Server image.
For the admin browser console specifically, including the host routing
split between the admin static host and /api/admin/v1, see
admin.md.
Controllers/ groupings
20 top-level groups, each responsible for one product surface the watch (game client) talks to. The grouping mirrors the watch's URL layout, which is why some folders are large — splitting them would obscure the mirror relationship.

Destructive admin account removal lives in AdminController under
DELETE api/admin/v1/players/{id} and is surfaced from the Players
detail modal. It requires two exact confirmations: the current username
and DELETE {id}. The endpoint refuses system, self, and still-admin
accounts; personal rows are deleted while durable authored content is
reassigned to the system account.
Request lifecycle
Middleware ordering matters in ASP.NET Core; the pipeline order in
Program.cs is below. Numbers are the order, not line numbers.
- Logging — Serilog enriches every request with structured fields.
- HTTPS redirect — Only when Kestrel has an HTTPS endpoint (direct mode); a no-op behind nginx/cloudflared.
- WebSocket config — 30-second keep-alive pings to keep cloudflared from killing idle tunnels.
- Per-host static branches (
MountStaticHost) —admin.{apex}, apex, feed.{apex}each serve their own SPA fromwwwroot/<dir>. Mounted withUseWhen(notMapWhen) so API calls under those subdomains still reach the controllers. - IP-ban check — earliest filter; rejects banned IPs before any work runs.
- Version detection (
VersionDetectionMiddleware) — readsX-DorkNet-Version, validates against the version registry, returns 426 on mismatch. Apex + admin/site/feed subdomains skip the gate (humans on browsers don't carry a client version). - JWT authentication —
UseAuthentication. - Authorization — role/policy checks.
- Player-ban check (
BanCheckMiddleware) — after auth so it can seectx.User. - MapControllers — route to controller actions.
- SignalR hub —
NotifyHubonnotify.{apex}/hub/v1, WebSocket-only,RequireHostfilter.
Multi-tenancy + the domain config
DorkNet is built to run many concurrent players. Every feature assumes
multi-user semantics, not single-player sandbox. There's no global
"current player"; everything threads playerId through the request.
The deployment apex (default localhost, overridable via
Domain:Apex config or DORKNET_DOMAIN env var) is read once at
startup into the DomainConfig singleton. Inject it anywhere code
needs to build a subdomain URL — never hardcode localhost.
public sealed class Foo(DomainConfig domain) {
public string Url() => $"https://cdn.{domain.Apex}/...";
}
Per-controller [Host("api.rec.net", "api.localhost")] filters are
gone; allowed hosts are derived from {apex} + *.{apex} and
enforced by HostFilteringMiddleware. Subdomain-discriminating
handlers branch on Request.Host.Host.Split('.')[0].
Version plugins
Versions/ holds an IVersionPlugin per client generation we support.
Today there's one (Late2020VersionPlugin for the 2020.12.18 build).
The pattern is a marker registry:
VersionKeys— the wire-format identifiers a plugin claims.Generation— human-readable name controllers branch on viactx.GetClientVersion().Generation.RegisterStrategies(IServiceCollection)— for plugins that ship generation-specific implementations (today empty; will grow as wire shapes diverge across builds).
When a new client build is wire-compatible with an existing
generation, just add its key to VersionKeys. When it diverges, add
a new plugin and register strategy bindings keyed by generation.
Reverse-engineering provenance
DorkNet is a clean-room reimplementation of the 2020.12.18 Rec Room
backend protocol. ~46 files carry Cpp2IL provenance comments tying
specific code to decompiled client internals. Example:
// Wire shape per Cpp2IL_ISIL/.../PLILLKHMNDA.txt deserializer:
// gap-skipping enum, not 0..N
public const int Member = 10, Moderator = 20, CoOwner = 30, Creator = 100;
The decompiled dumps themselves are not in this repo (dist/RecRoom-2020.12.18-isil/
locally, gitignored). The comments are the bridge — if you're writing
or fixing wire-shape code, always check the decompiled source first
rather than guessing from symptoms.
The docs/recroom-2020-client-* files are an exhaustive catalog of
client-side endpoints, DTOs, and request expectations extracted from
the same decompile. They're the ground truth when a controller needs
a new endpoint.
docs/recroom-2023-client-api-complete.md
is the equivalent for the March-2023 client, and additionally carries a
per-subsystem diff of client expectation against current server behaviour.
Three things account for nearly every defect it catalogues, so check all
three whenever you touch a 2023 endpoint:
- The verb. It is a
BestHTTP.HTTPMethodsordinal in the disassembly (GET=0, HEAD=1, POST=2, PUT=3, DELETE=4, PATCH=5). A route registered under the wrong verb is a 405 the client reports as a generic failure. - Scalar vs object. Many endpoints return a BARE scalar — the client
reads
1000, not{"Limit":1000}. Wrapping it makes the deserializer throw and the feature fails silently. - The body encoding. The client sends nearly every write as
application/x-www-form-urlencoded. An action bound with[FromBody]under[ApiController]rejects that with 415 before the handler runs. UseBinding/FormOrJsonModelBinderrather than hand-rolling a reader.
Database story
Two providers, switched by Database:Provider config:
- SQLite — default for local dev. File at
bin/<config>/data/dorknet.db. - Postgres — production. Connection string from
ConnectionStrings:Default.
Schema lives in Data/Entities/* and Data/DorkNetDbContext.cs.
SQLite dev DBs apply EF migrations under Data/Migrations/ via
Database.Migrate(). The production Postgres path still uses
EnsureCreated() plus idempotent bootstrap work under the same
advisory-lock discipline. Data transforms that can't be expressed as
schema migrations (seed renames, computed backfills) go in
Data/LegacyUpgrades.cs as idempotent methods registered in RunAsync().
See
Data/MIGRATIONS.md for the
discipline: one release = one migration; everything else is
LegacyUpgrades.
Where to start
If you've never touched this codebase, the most approachable path:
- Read a small Service (
ConfigService,DomainConfig,OnlinePresenceService) to learn the DI pattern. - Read a small Controller (
Health/HealthController,Strings/StringsController) to see how services are injected and responses are shaped. - Trace one end-to-end request through
Rooms/orPlayers/— middleware → controller → service → DbContext → response. The middleware pipeline (above) is the lens. - Look at one
Cpp2IL-cited line in a controller to see how wire shapes are pinned to decompiled provenance.
When in doubt: open DorkNet.Contracts/DorkNetRouteOwnership.cs,
DorkNet.Gateway/Program.cs, DorkNet.Server/Program.cs, and the
Versions/Late2020/Late2020VersionPlugin.cs summary doc-comment.
Together they explain route ownership, proxying, the shared server
pipeline, and version compatibility.
Acknowledged sharp edges
These look messy. They're messy on purpose — the alternative is worse.
- Some controllers are large.
AdminController.cs,RoomsController.cs,GoToController.csare big because they mirror watch surfaces that are themselves sprawling. Splitting them by endpoint group would obscure the surface-mirror relationship that makes the code navigable when paired with the watch's decompiled call sites. - Cpp2IL comments reference paths outside the repo. That's intentional — the decompiled source is provenance only, not shippable. Comments give a future contributor a breadcrumb to re-derive the wire shape if the decompile changes.
- Microservices use shared server code during extraction. The dedicated service hosts run the proven controller/service stack behind route guards instead of copying controllers into new projects. This keeps the client contract stable while route families are peeled away from the monolith fallback.
- Two-provider EF. SQLite and Postgres each have their own EnsureCreated/Migrate dance because some Postgres-only column types drift the model snapshot. The split is annoying but lets one codebase serve both local dev (zero-config SQLite) and production (managed Postgres).
- Hardcoded
rec.netURLs inRoomService+HtrAssetMirrorService. These pull canonical assets (room thumbnails,.htrasset data) from the official Rec Room CDN at seed time. The alternative is shipping the assets in the repo, which would put DorkNet on legally weaker footing.
